The Son Who Carried On
Henry Charles Vickery - Harry to his family - was born in Delhi in 1912 and lost both parents before his eighth birthday.
From Sanawar he entered military training while still a boy, became a skilled Royal Artillery artificer, served with the Royal Horse Artillery in India, then crossed into war in East Africa and the Western Desert.
His story runs through Eritrea, the Sudan Defence Force, desert convoys, the Jalo supply operation and the long decline of the Empire he had grown up inside. Along the way came the Military Medal, official commendations, marriage to Mavis and a new family life in Sudan.
By the 1950s Harry recognised that another world was ending. He left Africa with Mavis and their son Lyn and began again in Western Australia. Albert's generation had begun the chain. Harry was the son who carried it on.
